Upper Arlington in October: A Local's Weekend Plan
Upper Arlington in October: A Local's Weekend Plan
Cool mornings, empty pool decks and a leafy suburb ten minutes from Ohio State — here is how to spend a fall weekend in Upper Arlington.
Where to base yourself and why October works
Upper Arlington sits directly west of the Olentangy River and north of Ohio State University, and October is the month the suburb earns its reputation. Daytime highs land in the sixties, the maples along Northwest Boulevard and Arlington Avenue turn, and the city's pools and splash pads close for the season, which quietly drops rates at the handful of hotels along the Lane Avenue and Olentangy River Road corridors. Book a room on the Lane Avenue side and you are five to ten minutes by car from the OSU campus, the Short North and Grandview Heights.
There is no large hotel cluster inside Upper Arlington itself. Most visitors stay along Olentangy River Road just south of the suburb, or out by the Lennox Town Center on Kinnear Road, where parking is free and rooms are cheaper than downtown Columbus. For a couple, I would take a mid-range property on Olentangy River Road for two nights. For a family, the suites near Kinnear Road make more sense — you get a kitchenette and a short hop to the OSU campus. Skip anything promising walkability to restaurants; Upper Arlington is a driving suburb.
Saturday: farmers market, river trail and a campus wander
Start Saturday at the Upper Arlington Farmers' Market, which runs Wednesday afternoons through the season on the Mallway at the corner of Northwest Boulevard and Arlington Avenue. If your weekend misses it, head instead to the Clintonville Farmers' Market on Saturday morning, a fifteen-minute drive north up High Street. Either way, arrive before ten. From there, walk or cycle the Olentangy Trail, which threads through the suburb's eastern edge along the river toward the OSU campus; the stretch between Lane Avenue and Fifth Avenue is flat, shaded and about two miles one way.
In the afternoon, wander the Ohio State campus. Mirror Lake is at its best in mid-October, and the Oval's elms turn gold by the last week of the month. Parking on campus is the headache — use the Lane Avenue Garage and walk. For dinner, drive ten minutes south to Grandview Heights for the Grandview Avenue restaurant strip, or stay close and eat along Lane Avenue near the Kingsdale shopping area. Book Friday and Saturday tables by Thursday; the OSU football calendar fills rooms and restaurants across the whole northwest side on home weekends.
Sunday: metro park, golf and a short drive out
Sunday belongs to the parks. The Scioto Audubon Metro Park, twenty minutes south near the Greenlawn Avenue exit, gives you riverfront paths, a climbing wall and views back toward the downtown skyline — a good two-hour outing with children. Closer in, the Griggs Reservoir Park along Riverside Drive on the suburb's western edge has a flat loop trail, picnic tables and reservoir views that are at their calmest in the morning. Both are free, and neither needs a reservation.
If golf is the plan, the private clubs in Upper Arlington are members-only, so look instead at the public courses in the Columbus metro system, fifteen to twenty minutes out. Otherwise take the twenty-minute drive northwest to Dublin for the historic district around Bridge and High streets, or stay local and browse the shops at the Shops on Lane Avenue and Kingsdale. Allow forty-five minutes to reach John Glenn Columbus International Airport on a Sunday afternoon, or thirty to the Short North if you are extending the trip.
Practical notes before you book
Rates in Upper Arlington and the adjacent Olentangy corridor usually sit below downtown Columbus in October except on home football weekends, when everything within three miles of Ohio Stadium sells out or climbs steeply. Check the OSU football schedule before you fix dates — it is the single biggest variable in the local hotel market. Weekday nights are the bargain; a Thursday-to-Saturday stay often costs less than a Saturday alone. Reserve two to three weeks ahead for a normal weekend and six to eight weeks ahead if a home game falls on your dates.
Pack layers. October mornings in central Ohio frequently start in the forties and reach the mid-sixties by two in the afternoon, and rain is common in the first half of the month. A light waterproof jacket earns its space more than an umbrella. You will want a car: Upper Arlington has sidewalks and a walkable Mallway core, but the grocery stores, the river trailheads and almost every restaurant worth the drive are spaced a mile or more apart, and rideshares are thin on Sunday evenings. Free parking at the suburban hotels tips the balance toward staying there rather than downtown.
Before you book
What people ask before booking Upper Arlington.
Yes, practically speaking. The Mallway shops and a few cafes are walkable, but the Olentangy Trail trailheads, grocery stores and most restaurants sit a mile or more apart, and rideshares are scarce on Sunday evenings. Free parking at suburban hotels makes a car the simpler choice.
The last two weeks bring the strongest colour along the Olentangy Trail and on campus, with daytime highs in the upper fifties to mid sixties. Check the Ohio State football schedule first — home weekends push local hotel rates up sharply and fill restaurants across the northwest side.
Look at the Olentangy River Road corridor just south of the suburb, or the suites near Kinnear Road and the Lennox Town Center. Both are a five to ten minute drive from campus and Lane Avenue, and typically cheaper than downtown Columbus outside football weekends.
