Small Towns Within an Hour of Upper Arlington, Ohio Small Towns Within an Hour of Upper Arlington, Ohio

Five compact Ohio towns, all reachable in under 60 minutes from Upper Arlington, that reward a half-day or a full one.

Dublin and Powell: the northwest run

Dublin sits about 15 miles northwest of Upper Arlington via OH-257 or the I-270 outerbelt, roughly 20 to 25 minutes depending on traffic near the Sawmill Road interchange. Downtown Dublin's brick-paved stretch along the Scioto River holds restored 19th-century storefronts, the 1859 stone Coffman House, and a riverfront park with a walking bridge. Weekday parking at the Bridge Park and Historic Dublin garages is easiest; Saturday mornings fill up after 10 a.m. Most of the draw is browsing rather than touring, so three or four hours covers it comfortably.

Continue five miles north on Sawmill Parkway and you reach Powell and Delaware County, where the Delaware Municipal Airport's grass strip sits near the Olentangy River. Powell's downtown is a single block of antique shops and a 19th-century railway depot, and the zoo is a short drive east off US-23. Powell is the shorter stop of the two; Dublin rewards more time. If you want one northwest day, book Dublin and treat Powell as a coffee detour. Best months are May, June, September and October, when the riverfront seating and trails are usable without summer humidity.

Granville and the eastern hills

Granville is the longest of these trips: about 30 miles east on I-70 to OH-16, then north, roughly 45 minutes. The village grew around Denison University in 1831, and the college's hilltop campus with its granite buildings overlooks a Broadway streetscape of independent bookshops, a 1920s movie house and several bakeries. The surrounding Licking County hills hold the Welsh Hills Road loop and the 170-year-old Granville Inn. Allow a full day rather than an afternoon; the drive out is half the value.

Spring and early fall suit Granville best: the village holds its sidewalk sales and harvest events in those windows, and the surrounding roads are prettier before the leaves drop. Winter is quiet but the bookshops and bakeries stay open. Along the way, the Newark Earthworks, a Hopewell-era mound complex partly managed by the Ohio History Connection, sits just off OH-16 and is worth 45 minutes. Pair Granville with Newark and you have a genuine full day out of Upper Arlington without crossing an hour of driving.

Canal Winchester and Lithopolis, south on US-33

Canal Winchester is about 18 miles southeast via I-71 and US-33, a 25 to 30-minute run. The town centre is a compact historic district along High Street with a refurbished 1900s interurban depot, an old-fashioned hardware store and the BrewDog-owned brewery on Gender Road at the edge of town. It reads as a morning stop rather than a full day; three hours is generous. Parking on High Street is free and rarely difficult except during the town's summer festival weekends.

Lithopolis, five minutes further east on Gender Road, is smaller still: a crossroads with a covered bridge on Walnut Creek, a 19th-century town hall and a handful of shops around the Wagnalls Memorial library. It is a sensible add-on to Canal Winchester rather than a destination on its own. Avoid the area during the Lithopolis Honeyfest in early September unless crowds are the point. Otherwise, this southern run is the easiest half-day escape from Upper Arlington and the one I would pick for a first trip.

Where to stay and how to plan

Upper Arlington itself has almost no hotel inventory: the city's lodging sits along the Lane Avenue and Kenny Road corridors, and most travellers end up booking in Grandview Heights, Dublin or the OSU campus area, all within 10 minutes of Upper Arlington's centre. Rates in Dublin and Grandview generally run higher than the outerbelt properties near Sawmill Road, and free parking is standard outside downtown Columbus. Booking a hotel in Upper Arlington's orbit puts every town above within a 45-minute drive, which is the practical reason to base there rather than downtown.

Two practical notes. First, rental cars beat rideshare for these trips: Granville alone is a 60-mile round journey, and Lithopolis and Powell have no meaningful transit. Second, Ohio's two-lane farm roads are slow and deer are common at dusk, so plan to finish rural stretches before dark outside summer. For a two-night stay, I would book Grandview Heights for walkable dinners and use it as the base for Dublin and Lithopolis, then take a single long day east to Granville. Skip Canal Winchester if time is tight; it rewards locals more than visitors.

Before you book

What people ask before booking Upper Arlington.

How far is Granville from Upper Arlington?

About 30 miles east via I-70 and OH-16, roughly 45 minutes in normal traffic. It is the longest of these day trips, so allow a full day rather than an afternoon and plan to return before dusk outside summer.

Do I need a car for these trips?

Yes, for all five towns. Powell and Lithopolis have no useful transit, and Granville's round trip is about 60 miles. Rideshare is unreliable in the smaller villages, especially on weekends.

Where should I stay when visiting Upper Arlington?

Upper Arlington has very little hotel inventory. Most travellers base in Grandview Heights, Dublin or the OSU campus area, all within 10 minutes of central Upper Arlington and within 45 minutes of every town listed.
